The City of Coral Gables, founded in 1925, was envisioned by its founding father, George Merrick, as a city that, although small in size, would embrace a composite of architectural styles captured from majestic cities around the world. Located in southeast Florida and only 14 square miles in size, Coral Gables combines architectures such as renaissance, gothic and baroque as influenced by Spanish, Italian and Moorish cultures. Chinese, Anglo-Normand, Dutch-South African, Italian, French and colonial American villages completed Merrick’s dream. Monumental gates symbolize the cohesion of this new community which, like the city gates of antiquity and the Middle Ages, each has its own special character. The beauty of Coral Gables is highlighted by its picturesque Venetian Pool, the Biltmore Hotel, designated as a National Monument, and baroque churches suggestive of ancient missions.

Today, the City of Coral Gables has developed into one of South Florida’s most sought-out residential neighborhoods for its exceptional municipal services, security, and quality of life. Recognized as The Gateway to the Americas, it is also the location of choice for more than 175 multinational corporations, 25 consular and trade offices, and international cultural organizations. The world renowned University of Miami, with a total of 1300 international students from 109 countries, also reinforces the City’s international climate. In addition, the U.S. Department of State has located its Office of Foreign Missions in Coral Gables and the World Olympians Association has selected Coral Gables as one of only three worldwide offices.

Through the years, as a result of the associations created by the Sister City relationship, the people of Antigua and the people of Coral Gables have jointly formed important academic and cultural exchange programs and developed business opportunities which have significantly contributed to the success of this important program. More importantly, it has opened the doors of understanding and bonds of friendship have flourished between its people. .

During World War II many Navy pilots and mechanics were trained and housed in Coral Gables.
